  • Description : Not following the traditional depiction of the Body of the Dead Christ being embroidered or painted on fabric, in Zakinthos Island is painted on wood.
    The particular icon impresses the viewer with the realistic modeling of the naked flesh of the bier. The anatomical accuracy and the naturalistic manner of the details painted, contributes to its transfiguration.
    During the seventeenth century the representation of the Epitaph (bier) was accompanied by several figures. In the island of Zakinthos the bier of the Christ prevailed to be depicted lonesome.
