• THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE SAVIOR CHURCH
  • Item ID : 356
  • Collection Name : Holy Metropolis of Argolida
  • Type : Temple
  • Year : c. 11th-12th AD
  • Current Place : Plataniti
  • Description : This small but impressive church is a one-aisled cross-in-square basilica with an octahedral Athenian type dome.
Big stones where used at its lower parts, as well as ancient marble parts strengthen the whole structure.
The two lobed windows are surrounded by single brick relieving arch and ceramic dentil band, while the dome has lobed openings on all four sides and edges which are highlighted by carved pillars.
In the interior the naive seems to had frescoes, but today, only some leftover fragments of those frescoes, which date back to years after the building of the temple, are in a fairly good condition.
