  • Description : When was the monastery constructed nobody knows , only the local tradition says that initially a cave that has built its entrance located below the monastery was a hermitage from the 13th century .
    The Monastery took its name from the mountain which grow many medicinal herbs . The local tradition says was originally IN cave, that its entrance IS located below the monastery was a hermitage from the 13th century .
    In later years, after the destruction of Chios Island , in 1822 , the monk Cyril Trechakis along with his brother Nicholas, chased by the Turks arrived and stayed in the monastery for six years .
    In the year 1834 the bishop Cyril , in his letter to the Holy Synod , says that "the small monastery of Gymno is deserted ." The local people remember the last monk coming down on foot shortly before 1940.
    The temple is dedicated to the Virgin Mary has been turned into a natural hollow of the rock , a portion of which has been converted into an altar .
    Above the metal door leading to the cavernous church have identified two stones , one carrying a cross engraved date " 1827 Minia Maeotians CG ," while the second is marked with the year 1846 .
