Collection Name : Holy Metropolis of Mesogaia and Laureotiki
Year : 13nth century A.D.
Place : Paiania
Description : Near the foothill of the Mount Hymettos, the visitor can find one of the most elegant churches of the area. The church belongs to the middle-Byzantine period or around the 123-413nth century. It has a vaulted roof with undulated cornice. Its masonry built in heavy cloisonne style. The structure of the church is simple but impressive. As far as the 7nth-8th century the place was vibrant and active up to the 11nth century, thus the name of the place is still known by the name “Episkopi,” since the owner was a Bishop and the area was thriving since ancient times. Followed by enemy raids the church and its environs were deserted, but some local family undertook its maintenance and care of the chapel.
