Collection Name : Holy Metropolis of Mesogaia and Laureotiki
Year : 13nth century A.D.
Place : Markopoulo
Description : In a country region southeast of the city of Markopoulo, rests the chapel of the church of the Virgin Merenda. The name Merenda is a variation of the ancient municipality named “Myrrinounta,” as it is mentioned in Plato’s “Protagoras.” Thus the current location of the chapel is surrounded by numerous ancient Byzantine monuments and it is considered to be an important place for the Christian faith, as this can be proved by the many elegant chapels in the area. The chapel follows the cloisonne system in its masonry, rather voluminous in certain parts.
