Description : According to history, a man named Mark was sent from Fanari of Constantinople to the area. He undertook an important and active role during the Byzantine era and for this reason the area took the name Markopoulo after his name. Tradition states that the church of Saint George was build on the ruins of an ancient temple, which was dedicated to Goddess Demeter. The church is a simple structure following the architectural type if a single aisled basilica. The church of Saint George hails back to the 13nth century.
