Description : The church of the “Virgin Mesosporitissa,” is located in the “Nine Towers: area in Kalyvia, Thorikos. The particular area has abundant monuments from the Middle Ages. Architecturally the church belongs to the Athenian type, which has a cross-in-square plan with a dome, and the masonry is in the cloisonne style. The church’s foundation harks back to the end of the eleventh (11nth) century. The church is considered to be the protector of the active agricultural region, and thus the name given to the Virgin. It celebrates the day of the Virgin’s Annunciation on the 21st of November, which usually the month the sowing is beginning. According to the many Byzantine monuments founding, the area seems to have an extensive Byzantine history, but nonetheless, no recorded history exists for the specific church.
