  • Item ID : 118
  • Collection Name : Holy Metropolis of Korinthos, Sikionos, Zemenos, Tarsos and Polifegos
  • Place : Korinthos
  • Description : The foundations of the old Monastery can be found on the Eastern side of a steep rock, and harks back into the beginning of the 17nth century.
The main church of the Monastery is built in the traditional basilica type with brick gable roof and is not integrated to the rest of the church, but its conch reaches the top of the cave which is also serves as rest of the roof.
The church is decorated all over with frescoes, while the depictions are preserved in good condition. The residuals of the sculptures that are sculpted directly to the rock, witness the pre-existence at this position of an earlier medieval monument.
A marvellous example of the dexterity of the gravers is the sculpture at the entrance of the monastery, which depicts an eagle holding its prey.
The miraculous image of the Virgin bears the inscription: «Immaculate Virgin- 1631 " and kept in parish of St. Athanasios.
